Mangoes on the Big Island, Red Currants in Vermont

This is a photo of bush mangoes growing in Hank and Jill's garden on the Big Island of Hawaii. These babies are big and juicy. Oh How I wish we could grow them here. I remember when I first went to the Caribbean and was amazed at how many would just be lying all over the ground under the trees . I used to feed them to my then infant son , and he loved them. They are probably my favorite fruit. I have painted my new kitchen the colour mango and also the color of papaya . I think it looks good , and most people say they feel really happy in my kitchen, and I think its because of the colors .

I am also thinking about red currants today... I had a lucious bush of them , probably about 70 years old and very prolific in my former garden on the hillside directly across from where we eventually settled and bought land in November. Those currants were amazing and in the spring I am going to go back and get a few pulls and transplant here at my new garden space , which we have yet to make . It is going to alot of work and I cannot wait to get started! The currants I gathered I made into divinely delicious currant jelly , which I called Rojo Claro .. here is a picture of the berries took last fall when I returned from K'auai . The redness of them is just beautiful , don't you think ? The basket on the left are actually crab apples, which we also made in jelly. This is not a great photo let me try another ...

Friday Fruit Fruit for Valentines Day

Ah on this Brillantly bright Friday morning , my thoughts go to the sun and the soon to be here growing season . My hands itch to start some seedlings and get going !

Time to assemble a cold frame and get the packets and jars out very soon .

Valentines Day ... a good holiday to eat some sexy fruit , like a ripe mango or the ubiquitous strawberries dipped in choclolate . Pineapple also tastes really good dipped in dark choclate ... mmm a plan is hatching here.. must go foraging for a good pineapple , no small trick here in the frozen north , but not impossible ! Enjoy the holday and eat something juicy ...

this is a photo of the liliquoi growing on my dear friend isa's lanai in K'auai.... we make smoothies with them and put the crunchy seeds in , too .. sexy !

As I sit here watching the icy cold wind whip snow around outside my window I am thinking of fresh fruit... What a surprise !
I looked at some pictures from the big island this morning and saw mangoes hanging from their branches .. and people gardening in the rich , dark , volcanic soil of that island.
If I lived in a tropical place , I would grow alot of fruit and flowers , and perhaps someday I will . Did you see the hot pink fruit in the photo above ? That a dragonfruit. What a crazy color. They taste like a kiwi .
Lets see if I can find some more pictures form Kauai.
Oh , I had a very delicious and juicy grapefruit for breakfast . It was delicious!
have a juicy day ... Suki

Fresh Ripe Fruit and Flowers

What is it that makes me want to talk about fresh ripe fruit and flowers ?

Maybe it is because I am currently living in a place that is frozen and in the middle of winter, and we have neither readily available to us from our gardens . . We do have lots of them in the growing season , but not now.

Every year I go to Kauai, the garden island . It is full of ripe fruit and flowers . People bring me fresh fruit and flowers to my kitchen where I cook . I also go to the local farmer's market and but tons of them there .

My faves are mangoes and papayas. Then pineapples and liliquoi and guavas. there is something sensual about tropical fruits . They make my heart sing . Oh , also this crazy fruit called dragonfruit , which is hot pink. lets see if i can find some pictures of them , and my sumpuous kitchen in Kauai.

flowers that light up and connect to energy
